Last year the respective on-tape performances were presented  in a special online show “Eurovision Song Celebration” hosted by Krista Siegfrids the week after the contest.

Fortunately, this year the on-tape performances were not needed at all as all delegations were able to travel to Turin and the competing acts had no issue performing in person on Pala Olimpico's stage.

The numbers have been counted the after math has been done in order for the EBU to deliver us a solid outcome of this year's contest tv viewing figures. 

This year's Eurovision show which took place at Pala Olimpico in Turin achieved to attract a total of 161 million people on their screen to watch the event in 36 measured markets in which there was an increase of 7 million spectators. And the overall absolute number of viewers may be less than last year but must take into account that two major markets which laat year scored a total of 29 million every year were not counted in this year.

More interesting are the figures regarding the live shows, the group of ages and the countries audience. Let go and take a look at them in parts: 

The live shows and audience 

The viewing share for the Grand Final on Saturday 14 May was up three percentage points on 2021 at 43.3%, and remains more than double the broadcast channels average (18.2%). 

They say the future lays on the younger generations, a group on which the competition can rely on for glorious future times as the Contest was a massive hit with young audiences.  Among 15–24 year-olds, the viewing share of the Grand Final was up three percentage points on 2021 at 56.2%, remaining four times higher than the broadcast channels average (14.0%).

The countries 

A very wide number of countries saw their national audience grow for this year's competition. Host country Italy delivered their biggest audience on record (since 2011 when they re-joined the Contest), up +53% on 2021, with an average audience of 6.6 million viewers, accounting for 41.9% of TV viewing in the country.

Spain and the United Kingdom’s success at the Contest (finishing 3rd and 2nd respectively) did not leave the national audience ingnorant which honored their hopefuls watching the show giving the  best TV audiences of the past decade.

Specifically, 6.8 million viewers on average watched in Spain, up 86% on 2021, and their highest audience since 2008.The United Kingdom delivered the largest audience of all markets in 2022 with 8.9 million viewers watching the Grand Final, up 20% on 2021. 

In 13 out of 34 market the contest attracted over 50% of the viewing share, led by Iceland with 96.4% and followed closely by other Nordic markets (Norway 89.1%, Sweden 81.4% and Finland 72.1%).

The other markets which saw more than 50% of total TV viewers watch the Grand Final were Armenia, Flemish-speaking Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. Let take a look at some countries' statistics: 

United Kingdom - 8,9 million viewers ( 55% share) the highest of all markets

The Netherlands - 6,8 million viewers (68,5%) 

Germany - 6,54 million viewers (50%) 

Portugal - 1,29 million viewers (41,2%).

Italy - 6,59 million viewers (41,9%) the highest since 2011.

France - 3,175 million viewers (23,4%) 2,3 million less than 2021.

Spain - 6,835 million viewers (50,8%) +2,7 from 2021 and the biggest since 2008.

Austria - 503.000 viewers (30,2%) -90,000 from 2021 and the lowest since 2013.

Romania - 369.000 viewers (8,4%) - The largest since 2017.

Australia - 400.000 combined viewers (live & replay) - +112.000 from last year.

Belgium - 1,066,869 viewers on EEN flemmish speaking tv - Walloon broadcaster La Une recorded 352,324 viewers.

Norway - 1,2 million viewers (89% share) -275.000 viewers but +3,3% in the share.

Greece - 1,995 million viewers (52,2%) five times larger than the next popular show on Greek tv.

Denmark - 529.000 viewers - 4000 less than 2021 and the lowest since 2007.

Finland - 2,0 million viewers - 0,4 million less than 2021 but still the most popular show on Finnish tv the week.

Lithuania - +1 million viewers (18% share).

Cyprus - 80.000 viewers ( 53,8% down to 2021) 100.000 viewers less and the lowerst audience over the last decade.

Poland - 3,413 million viewers (36,35% share) +2,29 million increase from 2021 the lasrgest audience since 2016.

Czech Republic - 137.000 viewers - 44,000 less than 2021, the lowest since 2015.

Massive numbers for the Online and social media audience 

TikTok platform

TikTok became the Eurovision Song Contest’s Official Entertainment Partner in 2022 with the 3 Live Shows streamed on the platform for the first time. The platform saw a total of 189 million video views on the official Eurovision account during the two weeks leading up to the Grand Final.

Live streaming

3.3 million unique viewers watched the Grand Final live on the platform with 5.1 live streams in total. The Semi-Finals were streamed nearly 4 million times. 9.2 million engagement actions (such as liking, commenting etc) took place on TikTok in the week of the Contest.

Youtube channel

In the same week, 42.3 million unique viewers across 232 countries and territories watched content on the official YouTube channel. The number watching the Grand Final on YouTube rose nearly 50% year on year to 7.6 million unique viewers for the live show. The most views were in winning country Ukraine with over 2.2 million views to date. 63% of all those watching on YouTube were aged 18–34 years old.

Having all this brillian figures reflecting another successful year for the contest, Martin Osterdahl ( EBU/ Eurovision Song Contest Executive Supervisor) says:

"We couldn’t be happier to see the success of the Eurovision Song Contest across all our Members’ channels and on our digital platforms this year.

Once again, we have seen the enormous popularity of the Contest among young audiences, some of whom are discovering the event for the first time. The Eurovision Song Contest truly has global appeal demonstrated by the millions watching in every territory on earth and millions more interacting on social media".

During the second semi-final six countries' national jury results were detected with voting irregularities, which caused EBU's intervention in order to verify the official results.

Saturday evening the EBU had revealed that results of six juries had been removed from Semi-Final Two and the Grand Final due to irregular voting patterns. Namely, the jury results from Azerbaijan, Georgia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania and San Marino were removed and instead previous voting patterns replaced their votings. 

Now, EBU released a official statement explaining the story behind the removed national juries and how the results were adjusted in accordance with past voting patters. 

The EBU's statement has as following: 

"This year’s Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) was an enormous success in bringing hundreds of millions of people across the world together in unity and celebration.

As communicated on Saturday 14 May, the European Broadcasting Union's (EBU) independent pan-European Voting Partner detected irregular voting patterns in the jury votes of six countries taking part in the Second Semi-Final: Azerbaijan, Georgia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, San Marino.

The integrity of the voting, both by the national juries in each country and the viewers voting by phone or SMS, is essential to the show’s success. It is the EBU’s duty to all stakeholders, not least all 40 participating public service broadcasters, to ensure we can deliver a valid result at the end of each of the Live Shows. Any breach in the rules is consequently taken very seriously.

In the Second Semi-Final, it was observed that four of the six juries all placed five of the other countries in their Top Five (taking into account they could not vote for themselves); one jury voted for the same five countries in their Top 6; and the last of the six juries placed four of the others in the Top 4 and the fifth in their Top 7. Four of the six received at least one set of 12 points which is the maximum that can be awarded.

The pattern in question was detected as irregular by the pan-European Voting Partner and acknowledged by the Independent Voting Monitor, as five of these six countries were ranked outside the Top 7 by the juries in the 15 other countries voting in the same Semi-Final (which included three of the Big Five: Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom). Additionally, four of the six countries were ranked in the Bottom 6 of the other 15 countries voting in this Semi-Final. A jury voting pattern irregularity of such a scale is unprecedented."

How were the irregularities detected

Making it more clear which process was followed to spot the voting irregularities the EBU went on saying: 

As stated in the Eurovision Song Contest Rules and in the Official Voting instructions of the Contest, if votes by National Juries present irregular voting patterns (as may be detected by the pan-European Voting Partner and acknowledged by the Independent Voting Monitor), the ESC Executive Supervisor has the right to remove the votes concerned for allocating the ranks and to replace them with a substitute aggregated result calculated automatically to determine the final country result of these countries in the Second Semi-Final.

Given the unprecedented nature of the irregularity detected in the Second Semi Final, the EBU in consultation with the pan-European Voting Partner and the Independent Voting Monitor decided, in accordance with the Voting Instructions of the Contest, to exercise its right to remove the votes cast by the six juries in question from the ranking allocation in the Grand Final to preserve the integrity of the voting system. Consequently, the same procedure was followed and the automatically calculated substitute aggregate result has been used to determine the final jury results of the six countries involved, in the Grand Final.

These decisions were approved by the Chair of the ESC Reference Group, the Contest’s governing board, and the Deputy Director General of the EBU in line with the requirements of the Voting Instructions of the Contest.

The EBU has since discussed the jury patterns with the relevant broadcasters and given them the opportunity to further investigate the jury voting in their countries.

The EBU reconfirms its decision to replace the jury votes for these six countries with a substitute aggregate result in both the Second Semi-Final and the Grand Final.

The EBU also confirms the final rankings of the 40 participants in the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest.

The EBU, its Members and the Reference Group will continue to collaborate closely on safeguarding the integrity and success of an event that has been a unique platform for creative talent over 66 years, and looks forward to continuing to entertaining audiences worldwide.

When is a vote irregular? 

In addition the EBU clarified when a voting result can be considered 'irregular' by elaborating on the matter: 

An irregular vote is detected if multiple security checks are triggered:

a) Deviation from the norm - Does the result reflect the overall taste of the other professional jurors? Bearing in mind that they are all music professionals requested to vote on the basis of the same criteria laid down under the Rules of the Contest (e.g. a national jury puts at the top of its ranking (a) song(s) that the majority of the others rank lower.

b) Voting Patterns - Are there visible patterns of voting within the jurors?

c) Irregularities - Did the juries observe the Rules of the Eurovision Song Contest?

d) Reoccurring Patterns - Do other countries repeat similar voting patterns?

e) Are there beneficiaries - If deviations occur, who benefits from the result?

If the answer to more than two of these questions is Yes then the pattern is considered as irregular and the votes affected by such irregularity are removed provided that the irregularity is confirmed by the pan-European Voting Partner (benefiting from 17 years of experience administering the ESC voting) and acknowledged by the Independent Voting Monitor.

Turin brought to the world the sound of beauty delivering the biggest TV song contest with million viewers across the world!After months of national selections and preparations,  two weeks of rehearsals, two semi final shows the night for the Grand Final show of the 66th Eurovision Song Contest took place this evening live from Pala Olimpico in Turin, Italy.

A total of 25 countries competed in this evening's show. The 20 qualifiers from the 1st and 2nd  semi final shows along with the Big-5 countries among which this year the host nation, that have pre-qualified, took the stage for their final performance. Hosts of the Grand Final were the trio that also guided the audience through the semifinals live shows, Laura Pausini, Alessandro Cattelan and Mika.

The Opening acts

The grand final show opened with a Rockin’ 1000 performance in Turin’s historic Piazza San Carlo, which consisted over 500 musicians – vocalists, bassists, drummers and guitarists – performing John Lennon’s Give Peace A Chance. The same time  the audience at the PalaOlimpico joined in and shouted out a strong message of unity for peace accross the continent and the world. 

In addition one of the presenter, Laura Pausini, gave a great performance of a medley of some of her own biggest hits with the flag parade and the presentation of this year's comepting countries in the finals taking place on stage.

Interval Acts

Once the competing acts completed their performances the lines opened for the public to vote. Meanwhile we saw take the stage last year's winners, Maneskin who presented their new song “Supermodel”.

Further on one of Italy's legendary Eurovision icons, Gigliola Cinquetti ,the first Italian winner in the contest took the stage to performed her 1964 entry Non ho l'età" .

Just before the announcement of the voting results MIKA, left aside his hosting responsibility and got on stage and performed a medley of his greatest hits. 

The results

The outcome of the final was determined 50% by the votes from the national juries that were cast last evening during the Jury show and 50% by the televoting that took place in the Grand final live show. 

Jury Voting

First the spokesperson of each one of this year's competing countries in the contest, revealed the national final jury votes. With all 40 national juries' votes in this how the jury voting turned out: 

United Kingdom came first leaving behind Sweden second and Spain in 3rd place. 

Televoting Results added in

Following the jury results the hosts started revealing public voting and how many point each country received from televoting starting  from the country with the lowest score in the jury vote. Once all points were attributed the overall score declared winners of this year's contest Ukraine's Kalush Orchestra with their song 'Stefania' as they topped the televoting. 

Congratulations to Ukraine and Kalush Orchestra! We all hope that this victory brings a little smile on the Ukrainian people's faces, who are facing the tragic consequences of war in their country!

Two semifinals took place before the semi-final from which 10 qualifiers from each semifinal advanced to the Grand final. Lets go an see which countries were on the borderline of qualifying and what happened for others that were favorited to qualify but never made it through.

Semi-final One analytical results

The first semi-final took place on May 10, 2022  with 17 countries competed there and also France and Italy voted . Here is how the overall score turned out once the televoting was added to the jury results. 

The Overall score

As one can see Croatia was the closest country to qualify to the grand final from the non-qualifiers but having a significant distance from the last qualifier. Albania who were one of the favorites to qualify eventually finished 12th in the semi-final. Lets go and see the breakdown of results in the semi-final and how the split vote between the jury and the public vote justify the final score of the semi-fina one. 

The First Semi-final Split vote

Croatia came close to qualifying as the juries ranked them at the 10th qualifying position but lost the train after been placed 12th. On the other hand, one of the fan favorites to qualify, got a 9th placing in the televoting while the juries ranked her 14th eliminating her chances of qualifying to the final.  Greece topped the jury voting but came 8th in the jury ranking placing then at the 3rd qualifying spot. Another controversial results is that of Switzerland who got a 5th placing in the jury show but the public place Marius Bear second last in the 16th position, but managed despite the low televoting performance to qualify in the 9th spot.

The second semi-final took place on May 12, 202 with 18 countries competing in it and Germany , the United Kingdom and Spain also voted .

The Overall score

In the second semi-final as we can see from the overall scoreboard North Macedonia was the closest country to enter the top-10 qualifying spots as Andrea was place 11th but 20 points away from Azerbaijan which qualified 10th. Cyprus with Adromache, who the betting odds predicted her as potential qualifier was placed 12th in the overall score. Lets go and see the split votes in order to understand further how the overall score came out. 

The Second Semi-final Split vote

Taking a look at the split votes between the juries and the televoting, Sweden was the clear winner in both bodies while Serbia came second on the televoting but was ranked 8th by the juries. Australia came 2nd in the juries but the public gave Sheldon Riley an 8th place in the televoting. The most surprising result though is Azerbaijan which was placed 6th in the Jury voting bit got nul points in the televoting finishing in the last place but however managed to reach the final. The opposite happened for Cyprus who got zero points in the Jury voting but got a 9th qualifying ranking by the public, which wasn't enough for Andromeda to go through to the final. 

Overall Impression

The overall impression is that like all years the jury votes and the televoting for most of the countries show a slight or wider difference between them. However there are cases where the different ranking between juries and televoting raise lot of questions and arguements on how a committee of five people erase the verdict of thousands of public votes in a very contradicting way. Well it is what is it and we can make hours of discussion on the matter but somehow this element is what makes Eurovision unpredictable and the results exciting.

The Marcel Bezençon Awards , which owe their title from the founder of the Eurovision Song Contest, were introduced by Christer Björkman (Sweden 1992 and current Swedish Head of Delegation) and Richard Herrey (member of the Swedish ESC 1984 winning group  The Herreys) and are given out to three acts just before the final show determines the winner of the contest.

Namely the three awards given out were :

Press Award

The Press Award, which is determined by the voted of the accredited media members, was awarded to Sam Ryder from the United Kingdom for SPACE MAN, marking the first time a Bezençon Award is attributed to  a UK act.

Artistic Award

The Artistic Award, which is for to the best artistic performance and is attributed by the commentators from each participating broadcaster, was given to Serbia’s Konstrakta with In Corpore Sano.

Composer Award

The Composer Award, which goes to a song’s team of composers and is determined by the votes of all of the participating composers at this year’s Contest, went this year to Cornelia Jakobs, David Zandén, and Isa Molin for the song Hold Me Closer.

This is it people! After months of national selections and preparations and two weeks of ongoing rehearsals and two semifinals, Eurovision 2022 is about to conclude with the Grand Final Live Show taking place at Pala Olimpico in Turin at 21:00 CEST.

A total of 25 countries will be competing in this evening's show. The 20 qualifiers from the 1st and 2nd  semi final shows along with the Big-5 countries, among which host nation of Italy,  that have pre-qualified will take the stage for their final performance. 

Hosting the Grand Final will be the trio that has guided the audience through semifinals live shows, Laura Pausini, Alessandro Cattelan and Mika.

The competing countries

The running order has been decided by the producers and is set as below for the 25 competing acts:

Interval Acts

The Grand final show will be opening with “The Sound of Peace” performed by the rock musicians The Rockin’ 1000, who are holding the world record for the largest performing rock band and the hosting trio of the contest Laura Pausini, Alessandro Cattelan and Mika.

In addition, internally accalaimed star and grammy award winner Laura Pausini will perform on stage some of her greatest hits, lunder the guidance of director Paolo Carta.

Last year's Eurovision champions Måneskin will be returning on the Eurovision stage to perform their new song “Supermodel”.

The Results

The final outcome of the competition is determined 50% by the national juries' votes and the rest 50% by the public vote. With the jury votes cast last evening during the Jury show, the results of which will be announced today by the national spokespersons, the rest 50% determined tonight by the televoting, will be announced in the second part of the results presentation declaring the final winner! 

How to Watch the Grand Final Show

The first semi-final of Eurovision 2021 will hit the screen  at 21:00 CEST. You can watch the show either via the national broadcasters of the participating nations or via the live stream on the official Eurovision YouTube channel.

Once the Grand final line up was completed some countries started losing ground and some others have started to climb strongly on the betting odds board. But thats go and see what are the bookies are predciting at the moment,  with live final show just about to  take place in Pala Olimpico in the city of Turin

The Top 10 favorites

For a long time now since the war started in Ukraine, the hopefuls of the country, Kalush Orchestra, have been leading the betting odds board. Since the rehearsals started and even more after their qualification to the final their margin from the second became wider reaching at this point the impressive winning chance percentage to 60%. 

From place 2-5 we have the same countries swtiching place with ups and downs, with slight changes, with Sweden passing second over the last hours while third close behind is the UK with Sam Ryder. Italy has maintained firmly their 4th position over the last week with Spain closing the top 5 and showing a stready trend in the betting odds. 

On the other hand, the places from 6 to10 have shown the most changes over the last week.  Poland , Greece Norway and The Netherlands have been occupying those places, with Serbia entering strongly yesterday the top 10 and is currently place in the 6th place, followed by rest four. 

Close to the top 10 - ( Places 11 to 25) 

Just out of the top 10 we see Moldova which have taken the express train and have climbed after their semi-final performance to the 11th place of the bookies' board followed close behind by Finland, Czech Republic and Australia which are place 12th, 13th  and 14th repsectively. From that point downward very slight changes have take place with most of the countries maitaing the same positions after the semifinals. 

With the Eurovision Song Contest gotten us used to several surprises regarding the final outcome and with the betting odds not always confirmed by the actual results we have to wait and see tonight Grand final show how it will unfold and more importantly the verdicts of the  national juries and the public voting. Taking into account that the betting odds are an indication of the bettings trends only the result still remains uncertain.

All of the names of the people that will be presenting the national Jury votes in this evening's Grand final show have been unveiled. While the jury votes were cast during last night's Jury show in Pala Olimpico the results of the national juries will form the first part of the results annoucement with the televoting results following and declaring the final winner. 

The final outcome of the Eurovision Song Contest  is determined 50% by the votes of the national juries which are cast during the jury show, one day before the live grand final show and 50% by the public vote the night of the grand final. The presentation of the jury votes is held by the people appointed as national spokespersons.

The spokespersons that will announce the 12-point score from their respective country's national jury in the following order are:

With the the Semi-final 1 and the Semi-final 2 results in the line-up for Grand final show has been completed. The 20 qualifying acts of the semifinals will join the Big-5 countries in the Grand final show set for this Saturday, May 14, 2022. 

Folowing the press conference and the draw for the last 10 qualifiers that determined in which half they will perform the organisers revealed late this evening the precise running order according to which the 25 finalists will appear on stage.

The Eurovision week is just a stone throw away from its end and the Eurovision 2022 Grand final live show, with the Jury Show taking place this evening at Pala Olimpico in Turin at 21:00 CEST. 

The 25 competing acts will take the stage and perform their entries which will be watched by all 40 national juries. The Jury show is of significant importance as the jury votes count as the 50% of the score with the rest 50% been deteremined tomorrow by the public votes during tomorrow's Grand final live show, which will declare the final winner of this year's contest.

After months of national selections and preparations and following a week of rehearsals in Turin the first semi final live show was held tonight selecting the first ten acts that made it through to the final show. 

The 18 competing acts took the stage and performed their entries  live on air by the audience, with the viewers in the competing countries and those of France and Italy been able to cast their vote to determine the rest 50% of the results. 

While last evening's jury votes counted as the 50% of the score, the rest 50% was deteremined tonight by the public vote during the semi final 2 live show, which was host be the trio  Laura Pausini, Alessandro Cattelan and Mika.
