- Nemo's victory with the song 'The Code' representing Switzerland marked the first time a non-binary person wins the competition in the contest's history.

It was just a few hours before the Live Grand Final show when the EBU had announced that the Dutch hopeful, Joost Klein will not take part in the Grand Final coming as shock to most of the Eurovision community,

Of course the story had started dominating the news one day before when the Dutch delegate was announced to go under an investigation regarsding inappropriate behaviour, the act showed towards a female member of the production crew and who had already filed a compliant for this.

After ongoing speculations, rumors and drame on social media and news media outlets, followwing EBU's first statement, a second one came out explaining a little bit more of how the decision was made and how the process is progressing.

Namely the EBU's statement reads as following:

"The Dutch artist Joost Klein was disqualified from the Grand Final of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest following threatening behaviour directed at a female member of the production crew. Swedish police have investigated the offence, and the case will soon be handed over to the prosecutor in an accelerated procedure.

Joost’s behaviour was in clear breach of Contest rules which are designed to ensure there is a safe working environment for all staff and to protect the production. We are not pre-judging the legal process but, given the circumstances of what occurred and the fact that the police case will shortly be handed to the prosecutor, it would not have been appropriate for Joost to participate in the Grand Final.

The decision to exclude him was backed by the Contest’s governing body of Members – the Eurovision Song Contest Reference Group – and unanimously supported by the EBU Executive Board, following a thorough internal investigation.

The version of events released in some public comments and on social media does not correspond with the statements shared with us and the Swedish Police by staff and witnesses. However, the matter is now subject to legal proceedings and there is unfortunately nothing further we can add at this stage.

We have a zero-tolerance policy towards inappropriate behaviour at our events and will always take necessary action to address threats to staff – no matter who they come from."

According to EBU's statement the decision was backed by the EBU Executive Board unanimously and all of the Eurovision Reference Group. The outcome of the case lays now in the hands of the prosecutor who will have the final say on where things are judicially heading.

The whole case with Joost Klein shook up the Eurovision Community with speculation dominating the news media and the arguement whether the decision of disqualification was suitable dividing the fans and media outlets. It seems there will be a lot more episodes to come as we still don't know in details what exactly happened between Joost and the female member of the production crew.

The deama in this year's Eurovision Song Contest is ongoing. As if we didn't havve enough drama from the arguement around the Israeli participation in this year's edition the incident between the Dutch hopeful and a female member of the production crew brought along the cherry on top of the cake of drama!

The Story so far

The whole story regarding Joost began after his no-show up during the first dress rehearsal yesterday open to the media in Malmo Arena. His absense was enough to cause ongoing speculations and rumors flooding the social media on what had really happened.

The EBU just before the Jury Show rehearsal last evening confirmed an incident between the Dutch act and a female production crew member that was under investigation and as that was in progress they decide to use Joost's semi-final 2 taped performance!

Grand final show today and the EBU returned with a new annoucement which clearly disqualified Joost from today's Grand final show that will continue with 25 competing entries. The EBU's annoucement reads as follwowing:

The Dutch artist Joost Klein will not be competing in the Grand Final of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.

Swedish police have investigated a complaint made by a female member of the production crew after an incident following his performance in Thursday night’s Semi Final. While the legal process takes its course, it would not be appropriate for him to continue in the Contest.

We would like to make it clear that, contrary to some media reports and social media speculation, this incident did not involve any other performer or delegation member.

We maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards inappropriate behaviour at our event and are committed to providing a safe and secure working environment for all staff at the Contest. In light of this, Joost Klein’s behaviour towards a team member is deemed in breach of Contest rules.

The Grand Final of the 68th Eurovision Song Contest will now proceed with 25 participating songs.

Clarifications regarding the Voting process

As a result of no participation from the Netherlands in the Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final the following will take effect: All contestants keep their number in the official Running Order. There will be NO song in position number 5. The jury results, received after Dress Rehearsal 2 on Friday 10 May have been recalculated so that the Netherlands will not receive any points. This is why all jury members have to rank all songs from 1 to 26.

For example: if the Netherlands was ranked 9th by a national jury in a country the 10th ranked song is now ranked 9th and will receive 2 points and the former 11th ranked song is now 10th and gets 1 point. No points will be awarded to the Netherlands from the viewing public.

Dutch viewers are still allowed to vote in the Grand Final and the Dutch Jury result in still valid. The EBU will inform all telecommunications partners that the Netherlands is no longer participating, and we will endeavor to block the lines for Song 5. We ask that no one attempts to vote for Song 5. Should anyone try to vote for song 5 their votes will not count but there is a possibly viewers may be charged. The Netherlands will not appear on the scoreboard.

Trouble waters for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 organisers with an 'incident' taking place involving the Dutch delegate, Joost Klein, and an investigation underway by the EBU to solve the issue.

Without many details refealed around the incident that came up involving Joost Klein, the EBU started an investigation to shed light on the matter and take action accordingly. With the Jury show and the Grand final live show just a step away thing get more complicated on how the show will progress.

During the afternoon press rehearsal the Dutch delegate didn't show up which triggered dozens of rumors and speculations on what's the story behind his absence.

EBU released on the matter sheding some light on whatis going on and how things regarding his participation will develope that reads as following:

The investigation into the incident with the Dutch artist in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest is still ongoing. Discussions are also taking place between the EBU and AVROTROS, the Dutch participating broadcaster.

While the investigation continues the EBU has decided that Joost Klein will not perform during Dress Rehearsal 2 of the competition which is voted on by juries in the 37 participating countries.

His performance from Semi Final 2 will be used instead.

Thus we will not see Joost on stage performing this evening fro the jury show and we will have to wait and see where EBU's investigation will lead and what kind of further action it could bring.

Eurovision 2024 caught up in the arguement on Israeli - Gaza conflict

Already from yesterday tension was spotted during the semi-final 2 qualifiers press conference when Joost after a question addressed to the Israeli delegate asking if her participation jeopadises the other acts' security and the host reminding her that she cannnot answer if she doesn't want to, he answered 'Why Not' creating a very tensed atmosphere in the press conference room.

However, the majority of the present media did not agree with his way and applaused to Eden Golan's answer that the she is sure that the EBU is doing their best to have all the artists safe.

Meanwhile, several pro-Palestine protests are taking place in the city of Malmo, while during yeasterday's semi-final two the Belgian broadcaster, interrupted it's transmission during the Israeli performance in order to broadcast a anti-war message critisizing the Israeli military action in Gaza.
