Andorra: RTVA rules out a return at Eurovision in 2022

  • Andorra's national broadcaster RTVA has confirmed that the country has no plans of returning to the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Italy. 

    For one more year Andorra will stay away from the Eurovision Song Contest according to the national broadcaster's confirmation to ESCToday. 

    General Director of RTVA, Mr. Xavi Mujal has confirmed to ESCToday that there hasn't been any change of direction for the country regarding its participation in Eurovision. The broadcaster's official ruled out any return of the landlocked state in the competition next year. 

    This decision marks the 13th successive edition the country will stay away from the contest in which it last took part back in 2009.

     

    Andorra in Eurovision 

    Andorra has taken part in the Eurovision Song Contest six times. It's first time was in the 2004 contest and participated every year until the 2009 edition. The majority of the competing songs were sung in Catalan, the national language of Andorra. RTVA has used a mixture of methods to select their entrants in the years they competed, employing a national final for 2004, 2005 and 2009 and selecting internally between 2006 and 2008.

     

    Interest in the contest had been great for some time before 2004, despite the local Andorran broadcaster, Ràdio i Televisió d’Andorra (RTVA), not airing the contest until the early 2000s. Previously, citizens could watch it on either Spanish or French stations. 

    Sadly, the country has never made it to finals with their best result being a 12th-place finish in the 2007 semi-final with 'Anonymous' and their Catalan/Enlgish song "Salvem el món".

    Andorra’s last participation was in 2009 with Susanne Georgi who represented the country  with the entry “La teva decisio (Get a Life)”.
