Tuesday, 08 March 2022

  • Marius Bear is Switzerland's Eurovision 2022 hopeful and will be singing 'Boys do Cry' in Turin.

While Switzerland had seeked its Eurovision entry the last two editions through closed writting camps, SRF this year made an open call for songs from interested songwriters and producers.

The country used the same internal selection format that it has followed since 2019 when Luca Hänni brought an honorable 4th placing. The Swiss entry was determined by a combination of a 100 member jury panel made up by Swiss viewers and  an international jury of experts. Both of them contributed by 50% to the final choice.

Thus, today it was announced that Marius Bear has been selected for Eurovision 2022 with the official music video of his song 'Boys do cry' going public.

    A few words for Marius

Marius Bear (real name Marius Hügli )  was born on  April 21, 1993.  He is a Swiss singer songwriter from Enggenhütten (Schlatt-Haslen district, Canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden )

He is a trained construction machinery mechanic, plays the guitar and studied music production for a year in London at the British and Irish Modern Music Institute (BIMM) in 2017. On August 18, he appeared on the RTL show "I Can See Your Voice" and on January 9, 2021 he was the show act on SRF 1 in the program " 1 against 100 - The big annual outlook »

In 2018 he had released the single "Sanity" while his debut album “Not Loud Enough” came out one year after. In 2020, he released a cover of the Whitney Houston song “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” after performing it on the TV show I Can See Your Voice, which has over  3.4 million streams on Spotify.

As he has revealed , music never really grabbed him until I was 20. He always had guitar lessons and played in school bands but it was never really a focus. He never sang then either  and he never really felt part of that, so never said anything.

Singing only came about when he was in the Swiss army. He was in service for two years, and in the middle of his studies to be an officer, one of his soldiers joked that he would have a great voice for singing after hearing him every morning at roll-call. So he just tried it and followed since then the path of music.

    Switzerland in Eurovision

Switzerland made its debut in the first  Eurovision Song Contest back in 1956 and won the same year with Lys Assia. It was not until 1988  when the country was crowned winner for the 2nd time with Celine Dion leaving in second place behind the United Kingdom only by a narrow margin of 1 point.

In 2018 reached its 4th year of non qualifying results with the duo Zibbz and their song Stones. However in 2019 Luca Hänni made the difference for Switzerland as his entry “She Got me” not only managed to reach the grand final but achieved a 4th placing, the best result since 1993.

In 2020 Gjon's Tears was set to represent the country with “Répondez-moi” but saw his Eurovision journey stay finish early as the contest was cancelled due to the covid-19 pandemic.

Last year Gjon's Tears was invited back to repesent the country in Rotterdam with his entry “Tout L’Univers” which he performed in the second semi final on May 20, 2021 qualifying to the Grand final. The Swiss hopeful topped the jury voting scoreboard and finished eventually in the honorable 3rd place in the overall score with 432 points.
