United Kingdom: Mae Muller with 'I Wrote A Song' to represent the hosting nation at Eurovision 2023
Thursday, 09 March 2023

  • The British national broadcaster, BBC, has confimred that Mae Muller will be representing the country at Eurovision 2023 singing 'I wrote a song'.

The United Kingdom have revealed their hopeful for Eurovision 2023 as it was confirmed this morning on the Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2 that Mae Muller will be defending the nation in Liverpool.

Same as last year BBC joined forces with Tap Music in order to select their Eurovision 2023 hopeful. TaP Music is one of the biggest global music publishing and management companies behind some of the world’s most successful pop artists, such as Dua Lipa, Lana del Rey and Ellie Goulding.

Mae Muller wrote on TikTok about her song:

“This song is for the girlies that went through heartache, hurt or pain and came out of the other side, who persevered and came out stronger, who took the high road and chose to love themselves.

“Crying at home? Absolutely not. Spend the night at home? It’s a no from me. It’s giving growth. It’s giving empowerment. It’s giving liberation”.

Mae Muller was internally selected via the colaboration between BBC and TaP and will be singing "I Wrote A Song" in Liverpool.

The United Kingdom will compete directly in the Grand Final on 13th of May.

    A few words for Mae

Holly Mae Muller (born 26 August 1997) is an English singer-songwriter. Muller first received mainstream attention after releasing the single "Better Days" in 2021, with Swedish music collective Neiked and American rapper Polo G, which went on to chart in the top 40 in both the United Kingdom and United States.

In 2007 as a child, Muller appeared in the music video for "Grace Kelly" by Mika.

Mae grew up listening to her mum's favourite singer-songwriters, notably The Dixie Chicks, Gwen Stefani and sixties touchstone Simon & Garfunkel. Hearing Lily Allen’s refreshingly candid debut album, Alright, Still was a pivotal moment for Mae.

On 5 April 2019, Muller released her debut studio album, titled Chapter 1. She supported Little Mix on their 2019 LM5: The Tour alongside New Rules. Following the tour, she released a single titled "Therapist", which she had performed on the tour prior to its release. Alongside the release of "Therapist", Muller also announced her first national tour, visiting five cities across the United Kingdom. In September 2020, Muller announced that her third EP would be released on 6 November 2020. The EP, titled No One Else, Not Even You, was supported by a headline tour across the United Kingdom and Europe. The video for one of its songs, "So Annoying", was directed by Sophie Muller.

In 2021, Muller appeared as guest vocalist on "When You're Out", Billen Ted's follow-up to their number one hit "Wellerman". She joined the Swedish artist collective Neiked and the American rapper Polo G on the single "Better Days", a song which was a new entry at number 57 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart of October 30, later peaking at number 23. "Better Days" scored a Top 10 US Pop Airplay and also charted on the UK Singles Chart, reaching a peak position of number 32. Muller performed the hit on Jimmy Fallon.

On 27 October 2022, Muller released her single 'I Just Came To Dance'. As of March 2023, it has been streamed on Spotify over 2.5 million times.

    The United Kingdom in Eurovision

The United Kingdom participated in the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time in 1957 and has been crowned winner five times (1967, 1969, 1975, 1981, 1997). The UK holds the record of finishing in the 2nd place the most times than every other country in the contest, specifically 15 times. Although big names of the music scene have represented the country in the past ( Sandie Shaw, Olivia Newton John, Lulu, Buckz Fizz, Brotherhod of Man, Cliff Richard, Sonia, Gina G, Bonny Tyler and many more) in the latest years its results are rather disappointing for a country with such a big share in the international music industry.

In the latest years, UK followed the same formula of national selection in 2016 to select Joe and Jake who finished 24th. In  2017 through the same process Lucie Jones was decided to represent the UK ending in the final 15th while in Eurovision 2018 'You Decide 2018' winner, SuRie finished in the 24th place in the grand final. In 2019 Michael Rice won the national selection Eurovision You Decide 2019 and represented the British colours in Tel Aviv with his entry Bigger than Us, but scored another disappointing result for the Uk as he finished last in the Grand final.

In 2020 James Newman was set to represent the country with the song “My last breath”. The song was signed by Ed Drewett, Adam Argyle and Iain James. Unfortunately we never got to see the song reach the Eurovision stage as the contest was cancelled due to the covid-19 pandemic.

Nevertheless, BBC internally decided to stick with James for Eurovision 2021 in Roterdam where the British act performed his song "Embers" , which sadly finished last with nul points by both, televoting and jury voting.

Last year Sam Ryder finished second in Eurovision 2023 with "Spaceman" 466 points, the best result achieved by the UK since 1998, earning the most points in the jury vote, and the most points ever received for a UK entry.
