Tuesday, 19 May 2020

  • Rotterdam Ahoy is busy clearing the agenda for the spring of 2021. Just like this year, some events will be canceled or rescheduled to accommodate the Eurovision Song Contest.

According to Rotterdam Ahoy's spokeperson the arena is rescheduling the events booked in Spring 2021 in order to create the space for the Eurovision Song Contest . Of course this is not something new for Ahoy's officials. The Arena's spokeswoman says:

"We knew, of course, that this might be coming up, so there was already contact."

According to her, it concerns some events and options, which are moved or canceled in consultation. Similarly, in 2021 the Night of Orange, an annual festival with folk singers on the evening before King's Day, will not take place.

The Eurovision song contest is expected to take place in the second or third week of May next year. This year, the event was supposed to take place last Saturday, but that was canceled due to the corona crisis. The build-up for this would start in early April.

Construction will probably start around the same time next year. Rotterdam Ahoy's agenda will still contain the final of the Korfbal League before April 10, but that is no problem, according to the spokeswoman.

“Different spaces have to be built up. The arena will follow later. ”

It was just after the special show "Eurovision: Europe Shine A Light" that EBU and the three Dutch broadcasters (AVROTROS,NPO,NOS) revealed that Rotterdam will be the city to host the 2021 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. Prior this development Rotterdam's City Council had already approved of the necessary extra funding while the Ahoy Arena's administraton had expressed their willingness to host next year's event.
