Iceland: Daði Freyr releases his Eurovision 2021 song

  • Iceland's Eurovision 2021 hopeful, Daði Freyr has released his song "10 years" which he will performing along with Gagnamagnið next May in Rotterdam.

    During a special music show for Eurovision on RÚV  Straumar this evening, a show dedicated to Daði Freyr  the country's ESC representative released his entry "10 Years" that will represent the country in Rotterdam.

    Daði & Gagnamagnið won last year the Icelandic national final and were set to represent the nation with their entry “Think About Things”  which was the bookies' favorite to win the trophy. The covid-19 outbreak came up, the contest was cancelled but the Icelandic entry went viral across the continent topping several polls and voting of the alternative Eurovision shows that followed. 

    Once his comeback was confirmed, Daði, prepared 11 demos for the national broadcaster, RUV, in order to select the Icelandic ESC 2021 entry.  Soon after the song for Rotterdam was picked,  Daði Freyr made a call to the fans inviting them to contribute in building the backing choir for his entry, which eventually features the enntry's official music video. 

    "10 Years" is a song taking us to the disco music field. Its disco rhythm along with the humour behind the lyrics reflect a genre of song close to what the Icelandic hopeful had introduced himself with last year's "Think About things" . The track is inspired by Daði’s relationship with his wife, mother of his child and member of Gagnamagnið, Árný Fjóla Ásmundsdóttir. The song title refers to the total of year's , the couple have been together.

     

    A few words for Dadi Freyr

    Dadi Freyr is no stranger to the Eurovision world and the Icelandic national finals , as he had participated in Songvakkepnin 2017, when he finished 2nd. This year's entry was dedicated to his young daughter, aged only 10 months as he would like to know how she "Thinks about things" . The band was formed exclusively for the ESC 2020  national final and is made up by his wife behind the vocals, two friends on the bass and drums while his sister and one more friend complete the team.

     

    Iceland in Eurovision 

    The Nordic country, which debuted in Eurovision in 1986, was only absent in two editions of the contest, in 1998 and 2002, and that was due to low rankings that its entries received. It is the only country from the Scandinavic ones not to have won the contest, despite its best results  in 1999 with Selma and in 2009 with Yohana, when the country finished in the 2nd place

    In 2018 Iceland last year was represented by Ari Ólafsson and his entry Our Choice. Unfortunately, he didn’t make it to the grand final which was the consecutive  fourth time the country failed to qualify.In 2019 Söngvakeppnin 2019 winner, the group Hatari flew the flag in Tel Aviv and performed on stage Hatrið mun sigra, which qualified to the final where it came 10th with 232 points.

    Last year Daði & Gagnamagnið won the Icelandic national final, Söngvakeppnin 2020, and were set to represent the nation with their entry “Think About Things” . Although the contest was cancelled due to the covid-19 outbreak the Icelandic acts will have the chance to complete their Eurovision journey in 2021 with a new song.
