  • Azerbaijan's national broadcaster, Ictimai, has extended the deadline for song submissions in the selection, that will determine Efendi's Eurovision 2021 entry, to February 1.

iTV has made an open call for songs by opening the submission window for potential Eurovision 2021 entries. Composers and songwriters that ambition their entry to be selected as Efendi's Eurovision entry, had initially a deadine until January 19 in  order to  submit their music proposal for the country's ESC 2021 hopeful.

Now the composers have little bit more time in which they can send in their entries. Intersted song authors should send their songs via e-mail at [email protected]

According to 12xal a total of 150 songs have been submitted up to date. Once the submission period closes, the entries will be assessed and shortlisted. From these song a special focis group will decide which song must travel with Effendi to Rotterdam next May.

In 2020 Icitimai opted for an internal selection once again. Last year Azerbaijan's Eurovision 2020 hopeful was selected among five candidates : Samira Efendi, Laman Dadasheva, Elvin Novruzov, Jabrail Rasulov and Riad Abdulov. Efendi was set to represent the country with her song 'Cleopatra' , which never reached the Eurovision stage as the contest was cancelled due to the covid-19 pandemic.

The Land of fire debuted in the contest in 2008 and since then they have been present in every single edition of it, counting a totla of 13 participation.  In 2011 The duo Eldar & Nikki gave the country its one and only victory with their entry Running scared, leading the Eurovision event next year in the capital city of Baku.

In 2018 Azerbaijan was represented by Aisel and her entry X my heart, despite a dynamic performance she failed to qualify to the Grand Final. In 2019 Azerbaijan chose Chingiz through an internal selection to represent the country in Tel Aviv with his entry 'Truth', which finished 8th in the Grand final scoreboard.

While Efendi's Eurovision 2020 journey was interrupted due to the coronavirus outbreak and never had the chance to perform 'Cleopatra' in Rotterdam, iTV decide to stick with the same act this year, giving her the chance to complete her mission in ESC 2021.
