EBU: All Russian broadcasters formally expelled from the organization
Monday, 30 May 2022

  • The European Broadcasting Union has formally expelled all Russian member broadcasters from the organization.

In accordance with the unanimous decision from the Executive Committee that took place earlier this week, all three Russian member broadcasters, RTR, Channel One and Radio Dom Ostankino have been suspened from EBU's organization.

The three broadcasters follow the same path of BTRC, the Belarusian broadcaster, which had been expelled also ahead of Eurovision 2021.

All member broadcaster were notified by EBU about the suspension by sharing the following statement:

"On behalf of the Executive Committee, I would like to inform you of the decision taken by the Council on three Russian members of the EBU (RTR, Channel One and Radio Dom Ostankino) at its meeting yesterday. Based on the measures taken by the Executive Council at its last meeting on April 7, when it launched the suspension procedure, the Council unanimously decided to immediately suspend the three Russian members of the EBU indefinitely, which the Executive Board will review regularly."

Previously, the escalation of violence in Ukraine and the unprecedent use of force by Russia invading in Ukraine, had rised a wave of objections and threat of withdrawals by a singnicant number of participating broadcasters, making the EBU decide to kick out Russia from Eurovision 2022.  Responding to EBU the three Russian broadcasters threatened to withdraw from EBU.

Notably the three Russian broadcasters, Channel One, VGTRK and Radio Dom Ostankino, had been members of EBU since 1995, 1993 and 1996 repsectively. Their suspension means that they are no more eligible to take part in any Eurovision event nor share sports and news content through EBU.
