Eurovision 2021: Take the dance floor everyone ! The 80's are back !
-
With the 80's trend back in the music scene, several Eurovision 2021 acts and national finalists have been riding the 80's wave.
While Dua Lipa's and The Weekend's hits feature synths and rhythm calling us back to the clubs of color from the late ‘70s and '80s several Eurovision 2021 acts and national finalists are inviting us back to the dance floors's of disco balls and neon lights.
80's style music, neon lights, disco ball light on stage and electro sounds mixed with the 80's beat come to feature ESC 2021 entries and national final songs being a discoteque on their own.
Let's go and which entries took part in national finals and which also we will see in Rotterdam inviting us to step back in time and feel the 80's vibes.
National final entries
A number of national final entries marked this year's Eurovision selection season with their 80's beat but wasn't enough to secure their ticket to Rotterdam.
Norway: Raylee - "Hero"
If we want to descibe the comeback of the 80's in the music scene Raylee's song "Hero" is the ultimate definition for it. Raylee took part in this year's Norwegian national selection with the ultimate 80's beat song "Hero". Her song could easily be categorized in 80s anthems that stood up for woman's right. — a rebuttal to the 1986 Bonnie Tyler hit “Holding Out for a Hero”. The idea that woman need always someone to be saved is out of date, Raylee doesn't need one to save her.
A song flooded with 80's beat and not to speak of her national final staging with those ongoing dance moves throughout the song and the closing with a clear "flashdance" scene. What more can you ask of an 80's dance song!
Finland:Teflon brothers feat. Pandora - "I love you"
Back in February the hip hop trio 'Teflon Brothers' joined forces with Pandora in their entry "I love you" and competed in the Finnish national final, UMK 2021, for Eurovision 2021. The song that worked as Erika Vikman’s “Cicciolina” successor representing the 80's vibe entry in the nationa final. Written and Composed by Jaakko Salovaara, Axel Ehnström, Mikko Kuoppala, Heikki Kuula, Jani Tuohimaa and Anneli Magnusson the song features a catchy tune. “I Love You” is an undeniable earworm — from the irresistible synths and electro sounds that evoke the nostalgia of 80's invites the audience to put fun and joy in theri lives.
Estonia: Suured tüdrukud –"Heaven's Not That Far Tonight"
One more entry litterally taking us to the disco dance floor of the late 70's and 80's, this time coming from Estonia. The duo Suured tüdrukud participated in this year's Estonian national selection for Eurovision 2021, Eesti Laul 2021, with their entry "Heaven's Not that far tonight". However if something is not that far, that is the age of the 80's beat in which each listener is drawn into. The female duo showcased in their national final performance what the the 80's rhythm and dance floor is all about.
The Eurovision 2021 entries
While other acts didn't achieve to secure their way to the Eurovision stage other have their path open to Rotterdam and they are doing it the 80's dancing way. Let go and see which ones are promising us an unstoppable dancing on stage:
Greece: Stefania - "Last Dance"
This song titled descibes all what the song is not about!! Stefania was internally selected to represent Greece with her song "Last Dance" and if last year she was our Supergirl this year she turn to our super 80's girl! The song sees Dimitris Kontopoulos, Arcade, Sharon Vaughn on the composition team.
Stefania is riding the 80's wave that has flooded the music scene internationally and takes us back to the dance floor with a mixture of 80's and early 90's sound but with a more fresh and contemporary approach. The song begins in a low tone and builds up progressively up to the chorus, while the 80's electro instrumentation elevates it. The neon lights featuring the music video along with the illuminated scenery combined with the beat definately urge us to step back in time.
Lithuania: The Roop - "Discoteque"
The ESC 2020 favorites to win, the group The Roop won this year's Lithuanian national final with their song "Discoteque". The lyrics and song title say it all !! It's ok to dance alone ... a song about seeing the light and lifting yourself up from whatever is holding you back. Everyone is welcome at this discoteque. That’s because this is a dance floor all its own. Another 80's style entry which urges you to move to its vibes and beats of the past.
Poland: Rafal - "The Ride"
Rafał Brzozowski was internally selected to represent Poland at Eurovision 2021 with his song "The Ride". Rafal is one more act that is riding the 80's wave and presents us a synth-pop song with 80's vibes.“The Ride” has been written by the Swedish songwriters: Joakim Övrenius, Thomas Karlsson, Clara Rubensson and Johan Mauritzson.
Along with the song was released the music video in which the Polish act is dressed in black with dark sunglasses joined by a group of dancers while neon lights feature the background scenery.
Denmark: Fyr og Flamme - "Øverst på hinanden"
The Danish duo won the nationa final, Dansk Melodi grand Prix 2021, as will be hitting the Eurovision stage in Rotterdam with their song "Øverst på hinanden". This is one more song that you could easily listen to on the radio in the 80's . The song itself is an open call for dancing just to the vibes you receive and the beat you listen, it doesn't matter if you have never danced before. The entry integrates the retro sound of the 80's and leads you to free style moves of the 80's dance floor.
If all of this entries in not the 80's sound wave flooding the Eurovision music scene we don't know what else could describe it better. Thus turn the music on and make your rooms, your living rooms your personal 80's dance floor! The 80's are back for good!
