Eurovision 2021: Edsilia Rombley drops hints on the possible scenarios for Rotterdam
-
Eurovision 2021 hostess and twice Dutch ESC representative (1998 & 2007) , Edsilia Rombley , has dropped some hints on the possible scenarios under which the next Eurovision Song Contest is likely to unfold next May.
After last year's unprecendented cancellation and the organisers' determination to hold this year's contest, the fans are in suspense anticipating to find out how this year's competition will unfold. With the covid- 19 pandemic still on, Edsilia Rombley in an interview with NPO Radio 1 that a packed audience in Ahoy Arena has now been ruled out.
Edsilia said specifically:
"I think we can rule out the possibility that it will be a festival like it was held in previous years, with a lot of people. That will not be it."
According to Edsilia, the Eurovision committee is busy to come up with a good alternative and goes on saying:
"The organization is calling every moment of the day to see what is possible. But we have to wait and see how corona develops and now again with that new form. It is all very exciting. But it will continue anyway. Last year we proved that it is possible in a certain way and this year we are just going to make a combination of that."
The Ebu and the host broadcasters have previsouly confirmed that the forthcoming Eurovision Song Contest will take place one way or other.
Executive producer Sietse Bakker previously informed the AD that there is a small chance that the Ahoy will be full of audiences at all nine Eurovision shows. He said:
"Although we know that there are still tough weeks and even months to follow, we have high hopes that we will be in a different position in the spring. Nevertheless, we are keeping that scenario ready, we have been surprised by the virus more often. positive scenario, a Eurovision song contest without restrictions. We can not imagine that very well, yet we also keep that scenario on the table. "
With the final decisions set to take place mid February the organisers have high hopes that they will be in a different position in the spring. They have developed four different scenarios with which the comeptition can take place in every conceivable situation and a new winner can be crowned.
With the situation now and the measures that now apply, Ahoy with a full audience in May 2021 is not a picture difficult to imagine. Nevertheless, they are keeping that scenario ready, as they don't know how the pandemic will develop. Positive scenario, a Eurovision song contest without restrictions is always on the table but at the moment with the current circimstances, it is not something they can see happening.
We remind you that the four scenarios that have been put on the table for the next competition are:
- Scenario A– A Eurovision Song Contest as we know it
- Scenario B– A Eurovision Song Contest with social distancing measures
- Scenario C- A Eurovision Song Contest with travel restrictive
- Scenario D– A Eurovision Song Contest during a lockdown

Scenario A
According to this scenatio the Eurovisio Song Contest will unfold over 9 shows in the way and formula we have experienced it the previsous years. All delegations will be participate with their competing acts performing before a full audience, while a the host city will host a number of side events and activities.
Scenario B
In this case, the competition will take place with social distancing implemented throughout the contest. The delegations will be able to travel to Rotterdam but with a limited number of members.
Scenario C
According to this scanario the competition is held under travel restrictions. The delegates that won't be able to reach Rotterdam would compete by competing on home soil.
Scenario D
This is the worse it can get for the next contest. If a lockdown shadows the crucial time then the contest will again take place but without audience and the contestants will perform their entries from their home countries.
