Georgia: Iru releases her Eurovision 2023 entry

  • The Georgian Eurovision 2023 hopeful, Iru Khechanovi , has released her entry for Liverpool titled 'Echo'. 

    After winning the Voice of Georgia Iru Khechanovi booked the golden ticket to Liverpool representing the nation i n the 67th edition of Eurovision Song Contest. The Georgian entry just released with the title "Echo" is last song to complete the circle of this year's competition participants.

     

     

    "Echo" was penned by Iru herself and Giga Kukhiadnidze who has written the Georgian winning entries of Junior Eurovision. Iru also co-wrote “I Believe”, the Georgian entry for Junior Eurovision 2022.

    A few words about Iru

    Irina "Iru" Khechanovi, also known mononymously as Iru is a Georgian singer and songwriter. As a member of the girl group Candy, she won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2011 with the song "Candy Music".

    Khechanovi was born on 3 December 2000 in Tbilisi. She is of Armenian descent. As a child, she took part in various singing competitions. In 2011, on her eleventh birthday, she represented Georgia in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in Yerevan, Armenia as a member of the girl group Candy. The group won the competition with 108 points.

    In 2019, Khechanovi was a participant in Georgian Idol. In 2021, she released her debut solo single "No Jerk Around Me".

    In 2022, Khechanovi performed at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022 as part of a previous winners' medley. She had also co-written the song "I Believe" by Mariam Bigvava, the Georgian entry for that year's contest. The entry finished in third place.

    Later that year, Khechanovi was a participant in the fifth season of The Voice Georgia. She went on to win the competition on 2 February 2023, thereby winning the right to represent Georgia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023. Her entry "Echo" was released on 16 March 2023, and she is set to perform in the second semi-final on 11 May 2023.

     

     

    Georgia in Eurovision

    Georgia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest first time in 2007 with Sopho Khalvashi and her song Visionary dream . Since then it has competed 11 times missing out only the 2009 edition of the contest, when they chose to withdraw. Its best results were scored in Oslo with Sofia Nizharadze and her song Shine (2010) and Dusseldorf with Eldrine and the entry One More Day (2011) when both achieved a 9th placing in the Grand Final.

    In 2020, won the Georgian Idol and was set  to represent Georgia at the 65th Eurovision Song Contestin Rotterdam with his song  “Take me as i am.  Unfortunately, the contest was cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak depriving Kipiani of the chance to perform on Rotterdam Ahoy’s stage. In 2021 Tornike was selected internally for Eurovision 2021 in Rotterdam where he competed in the second semi final with the ballad song "You" , which sadly didn't qualify to the final.

    Last year Circus Mircus were internally selected to represent the nation in Turin where they came last in the 2nd semi final with their song  ‘Lock me in' failing to reach the Grand final.
