  • The Icelandic broadcaster, RUV, announced that  Daði Freyr's ESC 2021 entry will be released on March 13.

According to RUV's plan the song that Daði Freyr will perform on the Rttoerdam Ahoy stage next May will be reveled in a special show aired by the boradcaster on March 13

Talking about his Eurovision participation and his ambition to win the contest Daði Freyr stated:

"This is a competition so we have the mentality to win this. Most emphasis is placed on advancing to the finals so that there can be a good party here on Saturday. I do not see the whole point of competing in a competition if you do not intend to see if you can win shoes, "says Daði in a conversation with the news agency."

Daði and friends are now working hard on preparations. The song will be finalized in the next few days, costumes and staging are being prepared and a music video will be made ahead, which will premiere at the end of March. There is also a video game where Daði and Gagnamagnið will play a key role. The ESC  2021 entry will feature a choir, the formation of which is made via internet submissions.

Daði says that it is a different feeling to compose a song that he knows will be Iceland's contribution:

"We know that we are going into the real competition so it can be justified to put everything into this. I have a lot ready that I did not have last time. "You can plan things further ahead instead of going to the preliminary competition without knowing if we will move on."

The show will be curated by Björg Magnúsdóttir and Freyr Eyjólfsson and the music director will be Guðmundur Óskar Guðmundsson. Straumur's first episode deals with the Eurovision Song Contest over the years, where Daði Freys' song will be premiered.

    Iceland in Eurovision

The Nordic country, which debuted in Eurovision in 1986, was only absent in two editions of the contest, in 1998 and 2002, and that was due to low rankings that its entries received. It is the only country from the Scandinavic ones not to have won the contest, despite its best results  in 1999 with Selma and in 2009 with Yohana, when the country finished in the 2nd place

In 2018 Iceland last year was represented by Ari Ólafsson and his entry Our Choice. Unfortunately, he didn’t make it to the grand final which was the consecutive  fourth time the country failed to qualify. In 2019 Söngvakeppnin 2019 winner, the group Hatari flew the flag in Tel Aviv and performed on stage Hatrið mun sigra, which qualified to the final where it came 10th with 232 points.

Last year Daði & Gagnamagnið won the Icelandic national final, Söngvakeppnin 2020, and were set to represent the nation with their entry “Think About Things” . Although the contest was cancelled due to the covid-19 outbreak the Icelandic acts will have the chance to complete their Eurovision journey in 2021 with a new song.
