Tuesday, 05 January 2021

  • The Icelandic Eurovision 2021 hopeful,  Daði Freyr , is turning to fans to help him out with the formation of his Eurovision backing choir.

Having finished wrtting the song that he will perform with Gagnamagnið in Rotterdam at Eurovision 2021,  Daði Freyr now making a call to the fans to contributing in building the backing choir for his entry.

Due to the covid-19 measures that will be implemented in this year's contest, the organisers aim to reduce the number of people in the delegations. In order to achieve that for the first time, EBU has announced that it will allo pre-recorded vocals.

Therefore, taking into account Freyr's call for public support in forming his choir, it seems that his Eurovision 2021 entry will have pre-recorded backing vocals performed by a choir at some part of his song.

Freyr's post on twitter says it all:

    Dadi Freyr

Fans interested to contribute in Freyr's choir must send an audio file of one of the seven vocal parts to [email protected] by 11th January. The vocal parts can be found here. All recordings should begin fromt the same point as in the examples, and the sounds will make up the lyric, “Finds a new way to grow”.

    Iceland in Eurovision

The Nordic country, which debuted in Eurovision in 1986, was only absent in two editions of the contest, in 1998 and 2002, and that was due to low rankings that its entries received. It is the only country from the Scandinavic ones not to have won the contest, despite its best results  in 1999 with Selma and in 2009 with Yohana, when the country finished in the 2nd place

In 2018 Iceland last year was represented by Ari Ólafsson and his entry Our Choice. Unfortunately, he didn’t make it to the grand final which was the consecutive  fourth time the country failed to qualify. In 2019 Söngvakeppnin 2019 winner, the group Hatari flew the flag in Tel Aviv and performed on stage Hatrið mun sigra, which qualified to the final where it came 10th with 232 points.

Last year Daði & Gagnamagnið won the Icelandic national final, Söngvakeppnin 2020, and were set to represent the nation with their entry “Think About Things” . Although the contest was cancelled due to the covid-19 outbreak the Icelandic acts will have the chance to complete their Eurovision journey in 2021 with a new song.
