Iceland: Hera Björk wins Söngvakeppnin 2024 and makes her comeback on the Eurovision stage singing 'Scared of heights'

  • Hera Hera Björk won the Icelandic national final singing 'Scared of heights' and is making her comeback on the Eurovision stage in Malmo, Sweden.

    Following the the first and second semi-final of Söngvakeppnin 2024, the time for Iceland to decide for Eurovision 2024 came with the Grand final show of the national selection. Ragnhildur Steinunn JónsdóttirSigurður Þorri Gunnarsson, and Unnsteinn Manuel Stefánsson were the show's hosts. 

    Icelandic broadcaster RÚV, has announced on its website that the final decision on Eurovision participation and whether the winner of the  the winner of Söngvakeppnin 2024 will be flying to Malmo will be decided in consultation with the winning act, in the light of the facts in Gaza. 

    The show opened with a small tribute to Iceland best placing, Selma's 2nd place in 1999 and herself on stage performing 'Out of Luck'. Also on the show appeared Diljá (Iceland 2023) before the results were announced. 

    A total of five contestants will be competing for the right to represent Icelad at Eurovision 2024:

     

    1. VÆB “Bíómynd“

     

    2. Hera Björk – “Scared of Heights”

     

    3. ANITA – “Downfall“

     

    4. Bashar Murad – “Wild West“

     

    5. Sigga Ózk – “Into The Atmosphere”

     

    The Results

    During today's grand  final the result will came out through two rounds of voting. In the first round the combined public and jury voting decided which two songs  will advance to a Super Final round. In the Superfinal round , the Icelandic public exclusively will determine the final winner and next Eurovision representative. 

    The two artists who made it to the second round were:

    1. Hera Björk – “Scared of Heights”
    2. Bashar Murad – “Wild West

     

    Among these two Hera was declared winner of the national final and returns to the Eurovision stage after her previous participation back in 2010. 

     

    A few words for Hera

    Hera Björk Þórhallsdóttir (born 29 March 1972) is an Icelandic singer. She is known for representing Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 with the song "Je ne sais quoi", where she finished 19th, and at the Viña del Mar International Song Festival 2013 with the song "Because You Can", where she won in the Best Song category.

    Also in 2009 she had taken part in the Danish national final of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix with the song 'Someday'

    She has a several released albums and singles on her record among which Ilmur af Jólum (2000), Landslag Bylgjunnar (2001) Hera Björk (2006), Je Ne Sais Quoi (2010)Ilmur af Jólum II (2013).

    Hera is set to compete in the second half of the first semi-final of 7th of May in Malmo Arena.
