Italy: Sanremo Giovani 2021 rules released, submission period opens today; Nuove Proposte category removed for Sanremo 2022

-
RAI, the Italian national broadcaster, has released the renewed formula of Sanremo Giovani 2021 and announced the removal of the Nuove Proposte Category in Sanremo 2022.
RAI's preparation for the next edition of Sanremo Festival and the 2021 Sanremo Giovani are in full swing as the broadcaster has released the formula under which the Sanremo Giovani 2021 competition will unfold.
Among the main innovations is the elimination of the 'Nuove Proposte' category in February's Festival, guaranteeing, however, direct access to the Sanremo Festival to the 2 winning artists of December's Sanremo Giovani event.
How will the Sanremo Giovani finalists be selected
A total of 12 artists will take the stage of the Teatro del Casinò di Sanremo in December for the Sanremo Giovani 2021 final, which in turn will open the doors of the Ariston Theater to the 2 winning artists. However the potential finalists will first have to pass a series of steps and "exams":
The first step sees the artistic director engaged in listening to all the pieces in compliance with the participation requirements, then the musical commission, also led by Amadeus, will proceed to the choice of the 30 artists who will perform in the live auditions in Room A in via Asiago. The 30 selected artists who will access the live auditions (plus the winners of the Sanremo Area) will have to send the Musical Commission a piece different from the one used for Sanremo Giovani, which, in case of victory, they will present in February in the 72nd edition of the Sanremo Festival
In this phase 8 of the 12 finalists of Sanremo Giovani will be selected. The other four artists who will complete final line up in December will be selected, again by the Musical Commission, via the local Sanremo Area contest.
The rules of Saremo Giovani 2021
RAI has released the rules of the upcoming Sanremo Giovani competition which see a further reduction of the age range to participate in the competition. Precisely the rules are:
- artists must be 16 years of age on January 1, 2022 and, on the same date, they cannot be 30 years old
- artists must never have taken part in Sanremo among the Big, not even as part of a band
- the artists must not be part of the Sanremo Area, which we will discuss later
- the artists must have released at least two singles in their career
- the record companies will have to send the songs between 11:00 on Thursday 16 September and 18:00 on Saturday 16 October, forwarding all the required documentation
- the 2 artists who will go to Sanremo will have to present a second song, different, which must be ready in the audition phase and which could be requested in this context
- in the auditions 8 artists will be chosen by the musical commission who will join the 4 of the Sanremo Area, who must register in Sanremo Giovani no later than 22 November
- the songs must have a maximum duration of 3 minutes and 30 seconds
The voting system is combined between the musical commission, television jury and televoting, with percentages that will be defined later. The regulations are available here , or alternatively directly from the official website of the Sanremo Festival.
Submission dates
The record companies must send to the Festival Organization - starting from today, September 16, at 11.00 am and strictly no later than Saturday 16 October 2021 - the applications for participation of their artists with the respective "new" songs through the website www .sanremo.rai.it. Access to the application upload session will be allowed until 6.00 pm on October 16, 2021.
Sanremo artistic Director, Amedeus, states satisfied by saying:
“Again this year it will be a great challenge and also a privilege to discover and find emerging artists to be launched and enhanced in the live broadcast on Rai1 in December. Italian music is experiencing a moment of great vitality and as always Rai is on the side of artists and young people ”.
Back in 2018, Mahmood has secured his Sanremo 2019 participation through the Sanremo Giovani event and achieved to win the iconic Italian festival and to represent the nation in Tel Aviv with his song 'Soldi' that almost won the contest coming 2nd behind Duncan Laurence.
The 72nd edition of Sanremo is set to unfold in the first week of February.
Italy in Eurovision
Italy has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 46 times since making its debut at the first contest in 1956. After a 14-year absence from 1998 and on, the country returned to the contest in 2011. Italy has won the contest twice in 1964 with Gigliola Cinquetti and her song “Non ho l’età”. Italy’s second victory in the contest came in 1990 with Toto Cutugno and the song “Insieme: 1992”.
Italy’s come back to the contest has proved to be very successful, the country having finished in the top ten in eight times of the last decade (2011–2021), with Raphael Gualazzi second in 2011, Nina Zilli ninth in 2012, Marco Mengoni seventh in 2013 and Il Volo third in 2015, Francesco Ghabbani 6th in Kiev. In 2018 the winners of Sanremo 2018 ,Ermal Meta and Fabrizio Moro, represented Italy in Eurovision in Lisbon with their song “Non mi avete fatto niente”. The Italian duo achieved an honorable 5th place in the Grand final with 308 points and a remarkable 3rd placing in the public voting.
In 2019 , Mahmood, winner of Sanremo 2019 represented the country in Tel Aviv with his entry Soldi. The Italian representative kept the good results for Italy achieving a 2nd place in the Grand Final in Tel Aviv. In 2020 Diodato might have won the Sanremo festival with 'Fai Rumore' but unfortunately didn't have the chance to perform in Rotterdam as the contest was cancelled de to the coronavirus pandemic.
This year the rock band Maneskin won Saremo 2021 and went on representing the nation on Rotterdam where they triumphed with their song 'Zitti e Buoni' bringing the 2022 contest to Italy.
