Junior Eurovision 2021: The scenarios on how this year's contest will unfold

  • The EBU along with the French organisers are working out a number of scenarios regarding the way the next Junior Eurovision should unfold. 

    With the next Junior Eurovision just three months away and the covid-19 pandemic still around, although the vaccination process is underway across the globe, the organisers of the next competition are putting on the table a number of scenarios according to which the next contest will be held. 

    Like in the recent Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam, the EBU along with France Televisions, are examining within that kind of approach, the way the next Junior Eurovision will take place. Providing a statement to ESCPlus the EBU stated: 

    “Similarly to Eurovision, we are planning a number of scenarios for this year’s Junior Eurovision with the objective of making sure that everyone can enjoy the first Junior Eurovision to be held in France.”

    With three likely scenarios on the table the final option will be determined by the active covid-19 restrictions and the percentage of people being vaccinated in the host country. Circa 55% of the French population has been fully vaccinated with the authorities planning to reach that percentage up to 80% by December. 

    Namely the three scenarios currently under consideration are the following: 

     

    Scenario A

    This would be the best scenario for the contest, without any kind restrictions implemented as it takes place. The delegations, the audience and press will be able to attend the event exaclty like in the last "normal" JESC in 2019. 

     

    Scenario B

    Under this scenario the contest will take place in the same format the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 was held in Rotterdam. Social distancing and health measures will be implemented for all people involved in the contest. The participating delegations in this scenario will have to record an on-tape live performance of their entry that will be used as a back up performance in case they won't be able to attend the event due to covid-19 restrictions. 

    An audience of  3500 people will be allowed to attend the show, with the specific number to be determined in accordance with the number of covid-19 cases at that time. The press will be granted , like in ESC 2021, with onsite and online accreditations. For all people to access the venue a negative covid-19 test will be required within the last 48 hours before entering. 

     

    Scenario C

    This scenario is close to the previous one with the addition of further travel restrctions that will not allow specific countries reach Paris. In this case the participating countries will be using their live on-tape performances in order to compete in the competition, like the Australian delegation did in ESC 2021. 

    A Scenario D that was initially on the table in case it wasn't feasible for all delgations to travel seems not necessary after Rotterdam's successful safe contest with a low number of people detected positive. 

    In the following days the EBU will confirm the final number of competing countries in Paris and will release the format the organisers will follow to hold this year's contest. Junior Eurovision 2021 is set to take place on December 19, 2021 in Paris at the La Seine Musicale.
