Slovakia: No comeback for RTVS in Eurovision 2023

  • The Slovakian national broadcaster, RTVS, will not make its comeback  to Eurovision in the 67th edition of the contest in 2023.

    As ESCToday is reporting RTVS will not return at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2023 marking the country's 9th successive year of absense in the competition. The landlocked country follows the same path as Andorra and Luxembourg staying out of Eurovision over the last years. 

    Budget issues and low audience figures have kept the broadcaster away from competing in the contest. The country took the decision to withdraw back in 2013. 

     

    Slovakia in Eurovision

    Back in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1993 the country competed in the special preliminary semifinal in Slovenia, but failed to qualify and participate . It was right next year with  Martin Durinda and Tublatanka when the country made its debut in Dublin. Since then the country has participated 8 times and hasn’t much to show when it comes to results, as its best placing was at the 1996 edition in Oslo with Marcel Palonder and his song and his 18th placing. Because of its poor results, Slovakia was relegated in 1995 and 1997, and eventually withdrew in 1999. The country returned in 2009, although they withdrew again within 4 years, having failed to qualify for the final every year since their return. 

    It was Max Jason Mai  and his song  Don’t close your eyes  at ESC 2012 in Baku that represented Slovakia for the county’s last appearance.

    Slovakia is one of the three countries (along with Andorra and Monaco) to have failed to qualify from every semi-final they participated (though the latter has participated in finals prior to the introduction of the semi-finals). Although it failed to qualify, their 2010 entry “Horehronie” by Kristina it has achieved a significant number of views on the official Eurovision YouTube channel.
