Israel: Galit Burg, the Eurovision 1989 act, dies in a car accident

  • The act that represented Israel in Eurovision 1989, Galit Burg, has died in a car accident.

    Sad news for the Eurovision family as one of Eurovision's past participants has lost his life in a car accident yesterday. Galit Burg who represented Israel back in 1989 along with Gili singing 'Derech Hamelech' died yesterday in a car crash. 

    According to Israeli local media reports 54 year old Galit  was involved in a fatal collision between a truck and two vehicles near Kfar Daniel in central Israel. 

     

    A few words for Galit

    Galit Shira Burg (June 8, 1968 – November 28, 2022) was an Israeli singer, who was a member of the duo Gili and Galit, which represented Israel at theEurovision Song Contest 1989in the song 'Derech Hamelech' (The King's Way").

    Borg was born and raised in Bat Yamas the eldest daughter in a family of six children. Her father was a cousin of singerMike Brant. She came to the stage randomly.

    In 1989, musician Shaike Paykov submitted his song 'Derech Hamelech' (The King's Way") to the Eurovision preselection chosing the boy Gili Netanel, who was then 12 years old, to perform his song. Shortly before the contest, it was decided by the producers of the preselection song contest to pair him with a mature singer.

    The impresario and producer Shlomo Zach, who knew Burg, proposed her and so the duo "Gili and Galit" was created. After winning first place at the 1989 Preselection show, they represented Israel at the Eurovision Song Contest, in Lausanne,Switzerland. The song finished in 12th out of 22 contestants. The two recorded an English version of the song called "Shine for Tomorrow". Although the song was not a success in other countries, in Israel it became a hit. The English version of the song was not a success, and the duo disbanded soon after.

    In 1991, two years after performing at Eurovision, Borg formed the band Trump with which she performed at "Telrock" in Holon. In 1995, she competed for the role of "Wheel of Fortune Girl".

    Borg married the band's guitarist and moved intermittently to the United States, where she worked in music. In 1994, she released a rock album in Israel that was not a success. In 1997, she entered the European market underthe stage name Galecia, and released adancesong in English called "You Are The One", which received many sounds.

    In 2005, she released an album called "Touching You" consisting of her own and her husband's material. In 2013, she participated in the audition stage of the first season of the reality show "The X Factor Israel".
