Eurovision 2022 - Live in Turin: Rehearsals Day Six (May 5)

  • The Eurovision 2022 rehearsals progress to day six in Pala Olimpico, Turin with the second set of countries from Semi-final 1 and the first set from Semi-final 2 making their second rehearsals along with the first rehearsals of the Big-5 countries and host nation.

    The second set of 10 acts of the 2022 Eurovision First and Second Semi-final will take the stage today for their second rehearsal. Namely, Iceland, Norway and Armenia from the first semi-final and Finalnd, Israel, Serbia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Malta, San Marino from the second semi-final are making their second round of rehearsals. In addition the Big-5 countries and the host nation (Spain, France, United Kingdom, Germany and Italy) are making their first rehearsal. 

    The rehearsal week is divided into two primary phases: From today and up to Tuesday 3/5 the first rehearsals of all competing countries from the two semi finals take place while from Wednesday 4/5 till Saturday 7/5 the second rehearsals of all delegates in both semifinals will be held along with the first and second rehearsals of the Big-5 countries and the host nation. 

    This is how today's rehearsals will unfold in Pala Olimpico in CEST time:

    1.Iceland: Systur - “Með hækkandi sól”

    Morning of rehearsal Day 6 starts with the second rehearsal by the Icelandic delegates as Systur take the stage to rehearse their song “Með hækkandi sól” which means 'with the rising sun' in English. 

    The three sisters bring their sixties-seventies retro outfits on stage joined on the backign vocals by their brother. This is surely a famiy case! Great vocals with harmonies that real take you in Systur deliver their song in a very atmosperic and gently mode. Glittery graphics with mostly warm colors dominating the set contributing to sense of magic. 

     

    A few words for Sigga, Beta & Elín 

    Sigga, Beta & Elín (formerly Sísý Ey ) is an Icelandic musical group formed in 2011 by the sisters SigríðurElísabet and Elín Eyþórsdóttir.

    Born into a family of musicians, the sisters began singing and playing since childhood. In 2011 they formed the trio Sísý Ey, which they joined their respective careers as soloists.Their song for Eurovision 2022 Með hækkandi sól (With the raising sun) has been penned by Lovísa Elísabet Sigrúnardóttir.

     

    2.Norway: Subwoolfer -“Give That Wolf a Banana”

    Subwoolfer from Norway are back on stage for the second rehearsal of their entry 'Give that wolf a banana'. Keith and Jim take the stage joined by their three backing dancers and a DJ astronaut placed behind the in a higer level. The two of them are dressed in balck suits and white shirts while the dancers are wearing yellow body suits from top to bottom. Good vocals and a really energetic performance which follows a ballad song which make its upbeat tempo along with the setting itself easy for the viewers to remmeber. 

     

    A few words for Subwoolfer

    Subwoolfer is a Norwegian pop duo the identities of the which are not known but they present themselves as Keith and Jim.The Norwegian duo had major success with their hit ‘The Fox (What Does The Fox Say?)’ in 2013

    Subwoolfer however intorduce themselves as the The biggest band in the Galaxy, first formed 4.5 billion years ago on their home planet, the moon. Since then, the brothers, Keith and Jim, have conquered the music scene on every planet, making them the most successful pop group ever. This is the story they present for themselves and their Eurovision entry: 

    On 20th June 1969, a prophet named Neil appeared to them, and was soon hailed ‘the man with the strongest arms’. He promised to return telling them he would help them become the biggest band on his planet too, but only once they had written the greatest song in the universe, sung in his native tongue - English. Neil never returned however, and so now armed with the greatest song in existence, «Give That Wolf a Banana», they have come to earth in search of him, and to claim their musical throne by performing at the most important and prestigious musical event in the history of the world - MGP Norway 2022.

     

    3.Armenia: Rosa Linn -“Snap”

    Rosa Linn from Armenia is back for her second rehearsal of 'Snap'. The song begins and we see the Armenian delegate in her bedroom which is covered by sticky notes all over. In the first part of the song she is sitting on her bed singing and holding her guitar. All the set up are images from Rosa's live and moments that have played are key role on her path of life. It was in her bedroom when she started making nad playing music. So many memories she's bringing along on stage!

    In the second part she stands up and leaves her guitar aside. At some points she pulls off the wall some of the post-it notes revealing some key phrases for her: ”June 22nd”, ”The Last One”, ‘Snap’, . Really sentimental performance with the element water and the lighning creating the nostalgic atmosphere she wants to emphasize for some moments she'll never forget. Really touching song by Rosa who vocally is more than fine! Good job Armenia! 

    A few words for Rosa Linn

    Rosa Kostandyan, aka Rosa Linn, is 21-year-old music artist, songwriter and producer from Vanadzor, Armenia. Backed by punchy drums and polished synths, Rosa, shares the stories from her region in both English and Russian. 

    Her debut came out breakng through with the powerful track “KING,” alongside the ultra-talented electro-pop sensation KIIARA. Opening with a bilingual hook in both Russian and English, this song paints the picture of two different life experiences through powerful vocal performances from both artists against bouncing warm synths, heavy drums and a mesmerizing hook.

    Rosa is member of Nvak Collective, which was co-founded by Tamar Kaprelian who represented Armenia at Eurovision 2015.

     

     

    4.Finland: The Rasmus -“Jezebel”

     And here come The Rasmus for the second time on stage to rehearse their 'Jezebel'. Not much to say here for a band with so much experience in the music field. The leading singer is wearing the yellow rainproof logn coat while the rest are in black outfits paired with yellow high boots. Big black floating baloons are in the picture with yellow and flashing ligtning dominated the scene througout the song. A really energetic performance by Rasmus that keeps you nailed down to the end. 

     

    A few words for Rasmus

    The Rasmus is a Finnish rock band that formed in 1994 in Helsinki while the band members were in upper comprehensive school.The original band members were Lauri Ylönen (lead singer-songwriter), Eero Heinonen (bass), Pauli Rantasalmi (guitar) and Jarno Lahti (drums). Jarno Lahti left the year after and was replaced by Janne Heiskanen in 1995. Heiskanen quit the band in 1998 and was soon replaced by Aki Hakala. Pauli Rantasalmi left the band and was replaced by Emppu Suhonen in 2022.

    The Rasmus has sold 5 million albums worldwide, and about 350,000 albums in Finland alone. They have won numerous awards, both domestic and international. They are best known for their 2003 hit single "In the Shadows".

    The UMK winning entry Jezebel was written in just a few hours based on Ylönen’s demo and was finlised in collaboration with world renowned producer-musician Desmond Child.

     

     

    5.Israel: Michael Ben David - “I.M”

    Just before the lunch break comes Michael Ben David for his second rehearsal of "I'M'. Michael takes the stages with his four backing dances all dress in white. A really classy energetic performance with the Israel delegates looking he's been cut out of a musical. The choreography is stunning and Michael Ben David know how to showcase his X-factor on stage. Vocally brilliant throughout the song. 

     

    A few words for Michael

    Michael, 25, from Petah Tikva, a city located east from the city of Tel-Aviv. He has studied singing and performing since he was 13 years of age, having enrolled in the Beit Zvi School of the Performing Arts.

    Upon graduation he successfully auditioned for The X Factor Israel, where one of the judges was none other than 2018 Eurovision Song Contest winner Netta.He says of himself that he has an exaggerated and extreme personality despite his suffering as a child with a high-pitched voice, who was told as a child how terrible his voice is. His song is an anthem for self-esteem and respecting yourself as it is. 

     

     

    6.Serbia: Konstrakta - “In corpore sano”

     Konstrakta from Serbia is back on stage to give us one more different and standing out performance of 'In corpore Sano'. The Serbian delegate gets into the ongoing washing hand process sitting in a chair in front of a tub througout the song. Five backing vocalists surround her in a circular formation as if a mystic ceremony is going to take place. All of them have towels which are provided to her each time she need to dry her hands. 

    Although there seem to be some issue with the sound they are fixed in the second run while the staging is rather dark, with dark blue lights with some hand figures diplayed on the LED behind. 

     A few words for Konstrakta

    In the early stages of her career, the singer honed her vocal skills in the band Zemlja Gruva (Land of Groove); they had the honour of being the opening act for Amy Winehouse, at her last ever concert, in Belgrade in 2011.

    As a solo artist, Konstrakta is interested in contemporary social and emotional phenomena. Her song In Corpore Sano has been interpreted by some as a critique of the Serbian healthcare system and a satire on unattainable beauty standards.

     

     

    7.Azerbaijan: Nadir Rustamli - “Fade to Black”

    Nadir Rustamli from Azerbaijan is next up for his second rehearsal of 'Fade to Black'. We watch Nadir sitting on staircase like ones located in arenas. Nearby is his backing dancer who start copying Nadir's moves. Then the staircase splits in two part on the two sides of the stage. 

    Dramtic tone with a dark lighting to reinforece it while the camera takes shots from different angles which contribute to the dramatic culmination of the song. Vocally Nadir is once again captivating. A song that the juries will certainly look out for. 

     

    A few words for Nadir

    Nadir is an Azerbaijani singer,  born on July 8, 1999 in the city ​​of Salyan , Azerbaijan . From 2005 to 2016 , he studied at the secondary school No. 3 in the Salyan region. In 2016 , he was admitted to the Azerbaijan University of Tourism and Management and in 2021 he graduated from that university. He started playing music as a child.

    During his school years , he studied piano and solfeggio at the Gulu Asgarov Music School for 7 years. In 2017, Student Spring participated in the National Song Festival and won second place. In 2019, he participated in the same competition again and won the competition. In 2019, he represented Azerbaijan at the Youthvision International Song Contest, winning second place among 21 countries. 

    In 2021 , he participated in the 'Voice of Azerbaijan' project broadcast on the Public TV channel of Azerbaijan. In the first round, he sang "Writing'S on the wall" and two judges turned to Nadir Rustamli. He chose to compete in the team of Eldar Gasimov, Azerbaijan's Eurovision 2011 winner with Elle. Then, in the next stage, he sang "Beggin" together with Amir Pashayev Eldar Gasimov chose between Nadir and Amir and kept Nadir Rustamli in his team. Nadir Rustamli qualified for the next stage by singing "Khatiradir" in the 1/8 final. In the finale, "This is the end,"He sang "Running Scared" with Eldar Gasimov . In the final, 1 out of 4 participants would be the winner of the project by SMS voting. Nadir won the project with a rate of 42.6%

     

     

    8.Georgia: Circus Mircus - “Lock Me In”

    Circus Mircus are in the house for their second rehearsal of 'Lock Me In'. The Georgian delegates' pscychedelic show unfold in a colorful, joyful set where red the dominating color and their alternative styling certainly make the whole staging stand out. A big mouth displayed on the LED floor seems to be accompnaying them in singing while in this rehearsal more camera angles have been added and close-ups to the band's members. 

    A Few words for Circus Mircus

    The Georgian group was established in 2020 in Tbilisi, Georgia and has grown popular within the country showcasing a unique sonically sound. The group was formed by by three local circus academy dropouts. Namely it consists of the Armenian drummer Bavonc Gevorcyan, the multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Iago Waitman from Georgia, the vocalist and guitarist Igor Von Lichtenstein from Belgium and the Greek bassist and vocalist Damocles Stavriadis

    This is how the group defines itself: 

    Sonically unique, Circus Mircus encompasses myriad of genres, intricately reflecting the inner world and the life experience of the each band member. The cornerstone of their philosophy lies in the complete neglect of musical frameworks. 

    The group has already released a total of 10 music videos.

     

    9.Malta: Emma Muscat - “I Am What I Am”

    Emma Muscat from Malta is up next rehearsing her entry 'I Am What I Am'. Emma is wearing her silver shiny dress combined with glittering make-up. She begins her performance by playing the piano in the middle of the stage while during the first chorus she leaves that position in order to meet up with her backing dancers. The set is flooded mostly with warm yellow colors while Emma get in motion along with her dancers. A really pleasan ulifiting song which pass the message of self-respect. Vocally Emma delivers her song firmly and with confidence. 

     

     

    A few words for Emma

    Born in Malta ion November 27 1999, she approached music from an early age. After school, she decided to enroll in the University of Performing Arts. As an adolescent she showed her skills in singing, dancing, and in the use of musical instruments: she specialized, in particular, with the piano, and also started to compose both the music and the text of her songs.

    In 2016 she released her first single "Alone" on her YouTube channel and later in 2017 released her second single "Without You". In 2018 she participated in the seventeenth edition of the talent show Amici di Maria De Filippi, managing to enter the "evening phase", where she was eliminated in the final, finishing with fourth place in the singing category and a contract with Warner Music Italy.

    Also she  she participated in "Isle of MTV 2018" with Jason Derulo, Hailee Steinfeld and Sigala and then took part again the following year with Martin Garrix, Bebe Rexha and Ava Max; later, at a musical event in Malta, she duetted with the Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja and Eros Ramazzotti

    On 26 April 2019 she released her first single Avec moi, featuring singer Biondo.On 14 November 2019 she participated in the remix of rapper Junior Cally's hit song "Sigarette" (literally, Cigarettes). On 10 December she released the single "Vicolo cieco" (literally, Cul-de-sac); after the release of the song she stated in an interview that it would be the first official extract from her new album. On 3 July 2020 she released her summer single Sangria, with Italian rapper Astol, was certified gold in Italy and reached 21 million streams on YouTube.

     

    10.San Marino: Achille Lauro - “Stripper”

    Get ready to rock your shoes off with Achille Lauro who takes the stage for the second rehearsal of 'Stripper'. Achille Lauro appear again with his cowboy outfit ready to ride the rock wave on his luxurious feathered boa. No major changes to his performance from his first rehearsal and certainly not less energetic. 

    Two cages house the two guitarists as they play their part while on the floor images of eyes and mouths are displayed in a dominating red color. Achille's peformances combines the combines the intensity of rock music with sensuality passing the message of no sexula labels and frames. 

    A few words for Achille Lauro

    Lauro De Marinis (born 11 July 1990), professionally aka Achille Lauro, is an Italian singer, rapper and songwriter.He gained popularity in the Italian hip hop scene and he competed in at the Sanremo Music Festival 2019 with the song "Rolls Royce",at the 2020 edition with the song "Me ne frego",and at the 2022 edition with the song "Domenica".

    Lauro said he is a huge fan of Vasco Rossi, Kurt Cobain, Elvis Presley and The Beatles. Among his influences, he cites to have been inspired by singer-songwriters Lucio Battisti and Rino Gaetano in reference to his rock turning point.

     

    11.France: Alvan & Ahez - “Fulenn"

    Big-5 countries first rehearsals kick off with France represented by Alvan & Ahez. Alvan and Azez made it to the Eurovision stage after winning the French national final of ‘Eurovision France: c’est vous qui décidez’ between a total of 12 acts, with their song in Breton language 'Fulenn'. 

    Their song 'Fulenn' is performed entirely in Breton, a song based on Celtic codes to deliver an electro title for the less ambitious. The lyrics are also meant to be feminist. Alvan, from Rennes and 29 years old, revealed himself during the Transmusicales. He is accompanied by Ahez, three singers also of Breton origin Marine (23 years old), Sterenn (25 years old) and Sterenn (25 years old). 

    The delegates take the stage wearing golden and black costumes. France have a podium with some greenery which fits in with the general Italian gardens theme of the arena. Their performance features a mixture of  folk and traditional instruments  which urges the audience to follow the beat and dance along. Really good harmonies which reinforce the first impression that the four of them have been working as group for a while. Good job France!

    12.Italy: Mahmood & Blanco - "Brividi"

    Italy is in the house ready for their first rehearsal of 'Brividi' performed by Mahmood and Blanco. The Italian duo made it to the Eurovision stage after winning this year's Sanremo Festival. This of course is Mahmood's second appearance on the Eurovision stage after his first one back in 2019 where he finished 2nd with his super hit 'Soldi'. 

    Although Blanco didn't join his artistic partner today on stage, still the staging is stunning. Mahmood appears with a long black leather coat and white wraparound shades paired with black sunglasses. The set is literally flooded with light coming from the use of each existing spotight of the stage while the addition of smoke contributes in creating a atmospherical environment. Mahmood's smooth distinctive voice and harmonies with his artistic partner captivates the audience causing 'Brividi'! 

     

    A few words for Mahmood and Blanco

    Alessandro Mahmoud  born on  12 September 1992, known artistically as Mahmood, is an Italian singer-songwriter born in Milan to an Egyptian father and a Sardinian mother from Orosei, he was raised around Gratosoglio, a district of Milan.

    He rose to prominence after competing on the sixth season of the Italian version of The X Factor. In 2019, Mahmood won the Sanremo Music Festival with the song "Soldi", and went onto represent Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv, finishing in second place. His debut album, Gioventù bruciata, was released in February 2019 and reached number one on the Italian albums chart.

    Riccardo Fabbriconi  known professionally as Blanco, is an Italian singer and rapper born on  10 February 2003 in  Brescia.On 9 June 2020, he released his EP Quarantine Paranoid on SoundCloud After being signed by Universal, he debuted with the studio album Blu celeste on 10 September 2021, which peaked at number one of FIMI's album chart and was certified quadruple platinum.His most successful song to date, "Mi fai impazzire" with Sfera Ebbasta, topped the Italian singles chart for eight weeks and was certified sextuple platinum in Italy.

    13.United Kingdom: Sam Ryder - "Spance Man"

    Up next is Sam Ryder from Great Britain who takes the stage to rehearse 'Space Man' for the first time. Sam Ryder was internally selected to represent the UK and if one thing is sure about him is that he can count on the millions of followers on TiKTok being the most popular British act on the platform. 

    Sam brings the biggest prop on this year's stage, a huge metal construction with three wings as if the whole things is ready to take off or landed from space. If you add the lights flooding the place all over you can easily think that you re at Kennedy Space center and a take off is ready to take place. 

    Sam is wearing a black outfit paired with sliver trainers and stands in the middle of the metal connstruction on a circular pedestal. His vocals are dynamic and stunning! The metal constructions lights up and opens up. 3...2...1 ready for take off!! 

     

    A few words for Sam

    Sam Ryder was born in 1990 in Essex, UK. He is a singer/songwriter, rhythm guitarist who has been in music with various projects since 2009. He rose to fame after his sounds and music on TikTok went viral with many well known TikTok stars started making videos on his songs. With over 12 million followers and 100 million likes on TikTok, he is currently the most followed UK music artist on the platform.

    He formed rock band The Morning After who released two albums on Rising Records UK and JVC Victor in Japan. Their albums "You Can’t Hurt Steel" and "Legacy" have since shifted thousands of copies.

    In 2010 Sam was then recruited to tour and write with 80’s style glam metal band Blessed By A Broken Heart (Tooth & Nail/EMI) and contributed to their Billboard charting album "Feel The Power". After Blessed called it quits, Texas punk/hardcore band Close Your Eyes (Victory Records) asked Sam to join as their front-man and writer. In 2013 they released "Line In The Sand" which resulted in multiple song placements on MTV, NHL 2015 and MGM feature film "Max".

    On November 2019, he released as a single a cover of N-Trance's 90's hit "Set You Free".

    Sam self-released his debut solo EP in March of this year and is putting the final touches of his full length album that he tracked in Nashville, TN with producer Bryan Wilson (Frightened Rabbit, John Newman).

    14.Spain: Chanel - "SloMo'

    Second last rehearsal of the days comes from Spain with Chanel taking the stage to rehearse her song 'SloMo'. Chanel managed to secure her spot in the Eurovision 2022 class by winning the Spanish national selection of Benidorm Fest, which was the selection format for Eurovision 2022. Chanel Terrero Martínez (born 28 July 1991), known as Chanel Terrero or simply Chanel, is a Cuban-Spanish singer, dancer and actress. 

    Chanel takes the stage dressed in a very sparkly outfit paired with thigh boots. She's joined by five backing dancers, two female and three male, all dressed in black. The male ones appear with bare chests and sparkly shoulder accents. This choreography is the definition of motion that drifts away into 'I wanna dance along' feeling. Really impressive and well synchronized interaction between Chanel and her dancers. Vocally she delivers the song confident and flawless despite the ongoing movements. In simple words Chanel Slayyyyys!! 

     

    A few words for Chanel

    Chanel Terrero Martínez (born 28 July 1991), known as Chanel Terrero or simply Chanel, is a Cuban-Spanish singer, dancer and actress. Chanel was born in Havana, Cuba, and moved to Olesa de Montserrat in Catalonia, Spain, at the age of three. Part of her family was already of Spanish origin from Catalonia.She has taken singing, acting and ballet classes from a young age. She has studied with important artists such as Víctor Ullate, Coco Comín and Glòria Gella. At the age of sixteen she started her career in musical theatre.

    Chanel moved to Madrid to start her acting career. During the 2010s she participated in stage musicals such as Mamma Mia!FlashdanceEl guardaespaldas and El rey león. As a dancer, she has worked with different artists. In 2010, she was part of danced Shakira's performance at the MTV Europe Music Awards

    Chanel took part in the castings for the Spanish stage production of West Side Story. She was one of the three finalists for the role of Anita. She also was between the five finalists worldwide for the same role in Steven Spielberg's film version of the musical, West Side Story.

    15.Germany: Malick Harris - "Rockstars"

    Closing rehearsal of the day is Germany's first rehearsal by Malick Harris who performs 'Rockstars' on stage. Malick made it to the Eurovision stage after winning the German national final  "Germany 12 points' .

    Malick takes a stage and showcases his rap Eminem inspired style  and artisrtic image. He appears wearing a simple white t-shirt paired with black trousers. The staging is simple with a black backdrop and it's the artist himself and his guitar. Confident vocally he delivers the song amazingly confirming that even through semplicity you can rise to be a rockstar! Nice work by Malick!

    A few words for Malik

    Malik Harris comes from near Landsberg am Lech. The German-American has already landed hits in the airplay charts and has released his first album "Anonymous Colonist". Malik has also already completed his first tour and has also supported the likes of James Blunt, Alex Clare, Jeremy Loops, Tom Odell and LP. He was the first German artist to be seen on a Times Square billboard in New York City for a week when his single "When We've Arrived" was released in October 2020. And Malik has a well-known father: ex-talk show host Ricky Harris.

    According to Malik, his Eurovision entry is the most personal song he has published to date. He says about his song: 

    Rockstars' is a 'song that means so much to me personally and is intended to offer a glimmer of hope, especially at this difficult time, while also showing that we're all in the same boat.'
