Greece: A jury and the public will have a say on the Eurovision 2023 entry
Friday, 02 December 2022

  • Greece's national broadcaster, ERT, has confirmed that a jury and a committee of public audience will determine the Greek entry for Eurovision 2023.

Change of direction for ERT, as after the internal selections of the last four years the broadcaster is switching to a two voting committees song selection for Eurovision 2023.

While ERT has received 106 submissions for the next contest in Liverpool, the broadcaster's President, Constantinos Zoulas, talking on ERT's mid-day show 'Studio4' revealed that for Eurovision 2023 Greece will be selecting its entry through a combination of a jury's and public's verdict.

Precisely, a committee formed by the public along with ERT's seven member jury will be responsible to select which entry will represent Greece at the 67th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest next May. Talking during the show Mr. Zoulas metioned :

“What we are thinking about is to make an open call for interest from the viewers, obviously I want to believe that those who are interested in Eurovision will participate. We are thinking of creating an expanded committee of citizens, who will come to the Radio House of Agia Paraskevi, wear headphones, listen to the nominated songs, vote and their vote will count just as much as the EBU’s now.”

The audience's committee that is a new feature for a Greek selection is expected to consist of more than 50 members and will represent all ages and generations, giving of course bigger priority to the younger ages.

Talking about the formation of the public's committee ERT's President added:

"All we will try to do is for this committee to have an age distribution. All generations should be represented – obviously younger generations more and older generations less. Next week, probably, we will make this invitation. The director of Corporate Communication, Mrs. Dora Chiraki, decided that no representative and employee of ERT will participate."

Regarding the influence on the result Mr Zoulas revealed that the public committee's verdict will contribute 50.6% to the outcome while the rest 49.4% of the result will be determined by the jury. Zoulas also cleared out that this won't be a televised national selection but a special amended internal selection type.
